How to build shed foundation?

I have bought a plastic garden storage shed for my tools and I'm going to install it as soon as possible. It is a 12X10 shed. To install the shed flooring I should start by building the foundation but I really don't know how to do it. Can you give me any tips? What materials should I use? Do I have to apply for a building permission by the local authorities? I hope it won't be too complicated.

First of all, don't worry about permissions since prefabricated garden building do not need them. To build a shed base is quite simple if you like DIY but if someone helps you is better. It is very important to choose the most convenient spot of you garden to install your shed: consider the natural light that might be useful if you have a windowed shed and the nature of the soil that must be stable and allow good drainage. I think the best material for shed foundations is concrete but it also the most expensive.

Maybe watching this tutorial about laying shed foundations is more helpful than any suggestions.

As to permissions, I suggest you to consult your local code anyway. As to materials, I think that you might opt for a timber-framed foundation, considering that you bought a probably cheap plastic shed and that concrete is expensive. Place in your garden some concrete blocks that will support the timber frame. Better to buy precast pier blocks (as the on in the picture) that are even more useful since they provide further stability to your shed. Today skid foundations are very popular as well.
