What are the pros and cons of granite for kitchens?

I have to replace the old counter top of my kitchen and I started a research of ideas for kitchen design. I really fell in love with granite counter tops. What do you think about them? Do you know any pros and cons that I should consider before making my purchase? Moreover, I'd like to know if there are any granite suppliers where I can find cheap granite for kitchens.

I have a granite kitchen island and if I could go back in time I wouldn't buy it at all. Many people think granite and marble are the perfect materials for kitchen because of their resistance to staining but still they are very porous materials and they actually absorb liquids. Therefore, shall you choose a granite countertop, remember to cover it constantly with a sealent.

It's true but I love granite for kitchen work surfaces. If you choose this material, don't worry. It's quite easy to remove stains: clean the spot with water, rub it with baking soda (or alternatively with a mix of soup and flour) and then cover it with a plastic wrap. After 24 hours you the stain will have disappeared. Another lovely material for countertops is quartz (look at the picture!), especially Cambria quartz. It is even more durable and affordable then granite.

The price of granite is changeable depending on the availability. The same happens with quartz and other natural stones. Anyway, you can find many cheap granite suppliers on the internet and get a granite worktop 250x62x3 for £ 300,00. I know it because my daughter is renewing her kitchen. But what really astonished me is discovering that granite contains radon, a dangerous gas, even if engineers say that it is present in such a small quantity that there are no health risks.
