What shall I consider to buy a fire extinguisher for my house?

Good morning. I have just moved to my new house and its floor is completely carpeted. That is why I need to buy a fire extinguisher to place in the corridor. I have always been scared by fire! Can you tell me what I should consider before buying it? Thank you very much.

It is suggested to have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, one in the garage and one in the workshop, if you have one in your house.

Fire extinguishers can be divided into two main categories: the “portable” ones, that you can easily carry and handle, and the bigger ones that are not definitely recommended for residential use. Buy a fire extinguisher big enough to put out a fire but not too heavy.

There are three main categories of fires and the choice of fire extinguishers depend on this classification: class A is for fires due to wood, cloth paper and plastic burning; class B extinguishers fires caused by inflammable liquids such as gasoline and solvents and finally class C extinguishers are used with fires brought about by electrical equipment. For homes, ABC fire extinguishers are recommended. They are multi-purpose dry chemical extinguisher and contain monoammonium phosphate, a yellow powder that leaves a sticky residue.

There are also water extinguishers, otherwise called APW extinguishers (air-pressurized water) but they are recommended for class A fires only. Pay attention: if used on other types of fires, for instance on burning oil, the situation would get worse! In this case dry chemical extinguishers. They are filled with foam or powder and pressurized with nitrogen. I agree with the previous comment: buy an ABC extinguisher.
