A wrought iron bed or a cast iron bed for my first apartment?

I am finally furnishing my lovely first apartment and it is now the time to choose the single most important piece of furniture for my bedroom I can get: the bed. I have always dreamed of owning a traditional wrought iron bed, as my mom and dad have since my grandfather bought it at an antique fair. I am now looking for an antique - or better if already restored - wrought iron bed that fit my new bedroom and match my budget. I am just a little bit concerned that this purchase can be judged a little bit fussy, being my very first apartment at the end of the day.

A wrought iron bed can be an important addition to your bedroom bringing elegance and a special charm to any home. Although iron decorations seem to be your dream since you were a little girl, it is true that there are some significant differences between wrought iron beds and cast iron beds, especially in how they are formed. The fist kind of bed is the most common and it uses to be produced through various processes that constantly pound the metal by some tools to give a desired shape to the furniture. With regards to cast iron, it is directly formed after the liquefied metal was poured into a preformed molding container, giving the iron its shape after it has solidified. This way, the metal can take any shape based on the molding containers, but the result is a product that is not as pure as the wrought iron. Cast iron can take any shape based on the molding containers. Due to its impurity, it is often regarded as a ‘brittle’ iron, and is less likely to withstand against harsh environmental conditions. In any case, cast iron is still a good item for indoor although it is less stable, pure and stronger – also less expensive – compared to wrought iron.

Hi there!

If I were you, I wouldn’t be too worried about your dream to have an elegant wrought iron bed. First, consider that both wrought iron beds and cast iron beds are less expensive now than they were in the past, so price will no longer be a relevant consideration. In any case, don’t be afraid to buy the bed of your dreams, because most people spend more time on the choice of the perfect bed than any other furniture piece. Buying your first bed is, indeed, the most exciting part of furnishing your new apartment and it is essential to measure it more than one time before you decide to buy it.

I think you are right if you are carefully considering what will match the style of your new apartment bedroom and ensuring what materials your bed is made from. When the wrought iron bed is made of genuine metal, it will last forever requiring no other cleaner than a duster or a damp cloth. In any case, before buying your new bed, don’t forget to consider also that the strength of the wrought iron bed frame directly depends on the quality of welds.
